Oroszlány Komárom-Esztergom vármegye 5. legnagyobb települése, kb 18.000 lakossal.
Első említése 1383-ból van, ekkor Oroszlánkő néven szerepel. A 15. sz-ban a Csák nemzetség birtoka. A török kiűzése után felvidéki telepesek jöttek a pusztavidékre. A Rákóczi szabadságharc után Eszterházy József az új tulajdonos, ekkor 20 család alkotta a falut.
A várost övező barnakőszén hozta meg a városi rangot 1954-ben. Ezt követő években az ország egyik legfőbb szénbányászati térségévé vált.
Az eocén program keretében nyílt meg a Márkushegyi bányaüzem 1981-ben, mely 2014-ig működött. Nevét az egész ország megjegyezte az 1983. június 22-i sújtólégrobbanás miatt, melyben meghalt 37 bányász. Ezzel a virtuális ládával nekik szeretnék emléket állítani.
Mára a szénbányászat megszűnt Oroszlányban. Ipari park települt a városba.
