DK

The Royal Library Garden – also called the Library Garden – is a small oasis and hidden gem in the heart of the city. You’ll find it on Slotsholmen, between Christiansborg Palace and the Royal Library. The garden is located near the Ministry of Finance and where Christian IV’s old stock exchange building (Børsen) once stood. Today, it is characterized by blooming flower beds and large, shady trees. Only the shallow basin in the middle of the garden hints that a harbor once existed here.

In the middle of the garden stands a water sculpture that cascades water at every hour during the day. Created by sculptor Mogens Møller, it serves as a monument to the written word. The sculpture was donated to the Royal Library to mark the addition of the library’s modern extension, the Black Diamond.

The garden was designed in 1920 by landscape architect Jens Peder Andersen and royal architect Thorvald Jørgensen on top of Christian IV’s former military harbor, Tøjhushavnen. Its previous maritime function is revealed by the old mooring rings from 16th and 17th-century ships embedded in the wall at the far end of the garden.

In the middle of the garden, you’ll also find a statue of the world-famous philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. He gazes sorrowfully – some say toward the very spot in Golden Age Copenhagen where his lost love and fiancée Regine Olsen once lived.

In the garden’s four grass-covered corners, column bases from the old Christiansborg Palace have been repurposed as flower stands. A central axis runs through the garden, connecting the courtyard of the National Archives with the main entrance to the Royal Library.
