The lonely tree is the highest tree in the Cotswolds at 317m. It's a popular spot for walkers, but still manages to remain a peaceful place to take in the fantastic 360 degree views - on a good day you can see all the way to the Black Mountains in Wales.
The tree used to be simply surrounded by a metal fence and a few benches, but in recent years a memorial wall has been built around it, which seems to have been very popular.
I've based the terrain rating on parking at the ariels car park at the top of the hill. From here it's a decent walk, but the terrain isn't too tricky and the views are good. When I visited to collect the information for the cache, though, I parked at the alternative parking co-ordinates listed. This route is much steeper but we were cheered on by a large number of skylarks from their nesting places in the gorse - amazing!
Logging requirements
To claim the cache:
1) visit the lonely tree and message me with the number of benches that surround the tree and memorial wall.
2) Take a photo of the tree and some of the views, with either youself or something that makes the photo personal to you in the shot. I'd love for this cache page's gallery to show how the area changes with the weather, and through the seasons.
I hope you enjoy this area as much as I do.
