Geocache Description:

Why do you think Asheville is called "The Beer City"?  Do you suppose it has anything to do with the fact that it has one of the largest number of breweries per capita in the US?  Or could it be because of the more than 20 breweries located in the downtown area, and the additional 30-40 breweries that are in the surrounding area.  In either case, if you enjoy a good beer every now and then, it's likely you'll be able to find one in Asheville.

Asheville's beer history does not go back very far. The beginning of beer being brewed in Asheville is credited to Oscar Wong. A retired engineer, he started making beer in the basement of this Asheville establishment in 1994, as a post-retirement hobby. He built his brewing facility almost entirely out of retrofitted dairy equipment.

Through the years, many others have brought their brewing skills to Asheville. Some of the largest craft brewers in the country have built facilities here, partly due to the excellent water that we enjoy in the Western North Carolina mountains.

To log this cache: Post a photo of yourself (or some identifying item) in front of the plaque honoring Oscar Wong.
Optional: Tell us about your favorite Asheville beer or brewery.
