Das Jahr 2025 markiert 80 Jahre Frieden in Deutschland, 80 Jahre nach dem Ende des II. Weltkrieges, der Grauen und Leid über die Menschen auf allen Kontinenten brachte.
Die Gedenkstätte Seelower Höhen steht wie kein anderer Ort in Deutschland für den schnellen Wandel eines Schlachtfeldes zu einer Stätte des Gedenkens an die Gefallenen, denn bereits am
27. November 1945 wurde sie eingeweiht.
Doch sollte dieser Ort zunehmend auch daran erinnern, dass der Frieden bewahrt werden muss!

1. Frage: In welchem Jahr wurde die linke Stele an ihren heutigen Platz gesetzt?

Die bereits im Herbst 1945 angelegte Kriegs-gräberstätte für Angehörige der Roten Armee, die während der größten Schlacht auf deutschem Boden im April 1945 ihr Leben verloren, wird heute als "Platz der Ruhe" bezeichnet.
1972 wurde die Friedhofsanlage durch ein zweites Gräberfeld mit roten Grabsteinen erweitert.
Gedacht war es als Umbettungsort für sowjetische Soldaten, die 1945 auf einem weiteren Soldaten-friedhof in Seelow beerdigt worden waren.

Etwa 12.000 deutsche und 33.000 sowjetische Soldaten fielen in den vier Tagen der Schlacht um die Seelower Höhen vom 16. bis 19. April 1945. Deshalb gibt es in allen Orten des Oderbruchs Soldatenfriedhöfe.
Auch heute noch werden die Gebeine toter Soldaten geborgen.

Bereits ab 1991 erinnerte ein russisch-orthodoxes Birkenkreuz im Eingangsbereich der Gedenkstätte an die Opfer der Roten Armee im II. Weltkrieg.
2003 wurde am Fuße des Denkmals ein russisch-orthodoxes Holzkreuz mit der Inschrift „Den Kindern Russlands von der Mutter Kirche“ aufgestellt und geweiht.

Am 19. April 2013 wurde es während einer feierlichen Zeremonie durch das heutige steinerne Kreuz ersetzt.

The Seelow Heights Memorial stands like no other place in Germany for the rapid transformation of a battlefield into a place of remembrance for the fallen, as it was inaugurated on November 27, 1945.
But this place should also increasingly remind us that peace must be preserved!

The war cemetery for members of the Red Army who lost their lives during the largest battle on German soil in April 1945, which was established in the autumn of 1945, is now known as the "Place of Rest".
In 1972, the cemetery was expanded to include a second burial ground with red gravestones. It was intended as a reburial site for Soviet soldiers who had been buried in another military cemetery in Seelow in 1945.
2nd question: How many members of the Red Army found their final resting place in the cemetery established in 1945?

Around 12,000 German and 33,000 Soviet soldiers fell in the four days of the Battle of the Seelow Heights from April 16 to 19, 1945. That is why there are military cemeteries in all towns in the Oderbruch.
The bones of dead soldiers are still being recovered today.

As early as 1991, a Russian Orthodox birch cross in the entrance area of the memorial commemorated the victims of the Red Army in World War II.
In 2003, a Russian Orthodox wooden cross with the inscription "To the children of Russia from the Mother Church" was erected and consecrated at the foot of the memorial. (see photo on the plaque)
On April 19, 2013, it was replaced by the current stone cross during a solemn ceremony.
