Geocache Description:

Munster resident Mary Lou Kieswetter founded the National Council for the Encouragement of Patriotism. She solicited funds totaling $72,000 for the construction of the monument. Labor was donated by the Northwest Indiana Building Trades’ workers. The property itself was a gift from the Northern Indiana Public Service Company.  A trust was also established to cover the maintenance costs.  When Kieswetter retired and moved from the area, the property was turned over to the Town of Highland who continues to maintain the memorial.

The Governors of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida officially dedicated U.S. 41 as the “Highway of Flags” thus honoring our Nation’s servicemen and women.  Flags from these eight states proudly fly on either side of the American flag.

In order to log this Virtual cache please message or email what is written on the third row of the second plaque from the left side of the monument.

PLEASE NOTE:  You cannot turn left into the parking lot.  You must turn right as you head north on U.S. 41 (Indianapolis Blvd.)
