Pino Gordo
Ubicado a más de 1.400 metros sobre el nivel del mar, el Pino Gordo impresiona con su tamaño colosal.

In the highlands of Tenerife, near the charming village of Vilaflor, stand two monumental Canary Island pines (Pinus canariensis) that are not just natural wonders but also historical and cultural icons. These trees, Pino Gordo and Pino de las Dos Pernadas, represent the resilience of the Canary pine in harsh volcanic conditions and have witnessed centuries of history. The two giants of Vilaflor are Spain’s tallest and thickest native trees, making them unique and irreplaceable natural monuments.
Pino Gordo (The Fat Pine)
Pino Gordo, located at over 1,400 meters above sea level, amazes visitors with its colossal size.
- Trunk circumference: 9.36 meters, making it the thickest native tree in Spain.
- Height: 45.12 meters.
- Age: Approximately 750–800 years.
Known as the elder of the Canary forests, this tree symbolizes nature’s strength and endurance. Its towering canopy and broad branches create a magnificent crown, and its fire-resistant bark has allowed it to survive centuries of wildfires and human impact. It takes at least eight people with outstretched arms to fully embrace its trunk.
Pino Gordo is part of the Corona Forestal Natural Park and is featured in Vilaflor’s coat of arms as a symbol of the region’s natural beauty and strength.
Pino de las Dos Pernadas (The Two-Legged Pine)
Just a short 150-meter walk from Pino Gordo, Pino de las Dos Pernadas is another exceptional example of the Canary pine. To reach it, cross the road and follow a dirt trail.
- Height: 56 meters, confirmed by a laser altimeter, equivalent to an 18-story building. It is the tallest native tree in Spain, surpassed only by eucalyptus in Galicia and a Douglas fir in the Basque Country.
- Trunk circumference (at 1.3 m height): 8.35 meters.
- Age: Approximately 500–600 years.
This tree’s unique form, with two massive trunk-like branches rising skyward, makes it a spectacular example of nature’s artistry. While less photogenic than Pino Gordo, its height and grandeur captivate all who visit.
