Khao Chee Chan is one of the most recognizable tourist attractions in the Pattaya area of Thailand visited by Thais and foreigners alike. Here are some interesting things to know before you go.
* Open 0800 to 1800 daily with no entry fee
* The image is 109 m x 70 m ( 358 ft x 230 ft.)
* It is the largest carved Buddha image in the world
* Created in 1996 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coronation of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
* The limestone mountain was originally cut to build runways for the Royal Thai Air Force-United States Air Force Military Base at U-Tapao Royal Thai Navy Airfield during the Vietnam War
* The mountain face was flattened and teams from the Phra Chomklao Technology Institute used laser technology to cut the outline of the Buddha image thereby creating the first of its kind line-edged Buddha image in the world and a permanent religious representation of Thailand
* It was later inlaid with gold leaf blessing the mountain with permanent status as a sacred site
* There are meditation caves embellished with intricate Buddhist artwork that are part of the temple complex
* Beautiful gardens maintained by the Royal Thai Marine Corps surround the complex
* The Buddha image is called Maha Vajira Uttamobhassada, which means "the great prophet who brings enlightenment"
** Nearby places to visit:
* Nong Nooch Garden
* Buddhist Monastery Wat Yanasangwararam
* Royal Chinese temple Viharn Sien
* Silverlake Vinyard
I have visited all these places many times as they are just a few kilometers from my home in Bang Saray and the best part about visiting Buddha Mountain and this Virtual cache is there is no entry fee!
