About the building
The main building of the National Library of Finland is one of the most renowned landmarks of the early-19th century Empire architecture and is also significant among the public libraries of its time at a European level. Taken as a whole, the three grand halls of the National Library of Finland are one of the finest entities in Finnish architecture, a university temple dedicated to science. The entrance of the library is opposite the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, currently known as the Helsinki Cathedral, built at the same time.
The large halls of the library are all interconnected. The entrance leads directly to the core of the building, the Cupola Hall, and continues to Rotunda annex and Fabiania building. The numerous reading rooms, South Hall and North Hall are connected to the Cupola Hall. Hall columns are coated with stucco marble, each hall with its own shade. The floor of the Cupola Hall is made of domestic Lapland marble.
Visiting the library
The library is usually open on weekdays Mon-Fri from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. [Opening hours]
Leave coats, umbrellas and bags in the cloakroom on the ground floor, free of charge. You may take your laptop with you into the library. The library’s reading rooms are intended for silent work. Please set your mobile devices on silent mode. Do please leave the reading room if you must, for example, take a phone call.
Task 1: Enter the National Library and go to the exhibition showcase in the Music Library lobby, the location of which can be found on the map as a waypoint.
Take a photo of your chosen music player so that you, your personal nickname or mascot is reflected as a mirror image in the glass of the display case. Do not use a flash. Add the photo you take to your found it log. [Sample photo]
Please note! The purpose of the photo is to prove that you have personally visited the cache. If you use the same photo as another visitor, please mention in the log text what personal items are visible in the reflection in the glass.
Task 2: Go outside to the starting point. Look straight at the curved outer wall of the library and find the eight-letter word beginning with the letter M that is closest to you.
Send an email to word@geo.arisoft.fi with your nickname in the subject line. If the word is correct, you will receive a confirmation email. Don't forget to write the word you found in the email address and your nickname in the email subject line. Check your spam folder if you don't see a confirmation message.
Alternatively, you can send your answers via the Message Center. Both tasks must be completed. Incomplete founds will be deleted.
Rakennuksesta
Kansalliskirjaston päärakennus on Suomen 1800-luvun alkupuolen empirearkkitehtuurin tunnetuimpia muistomerkkejä ja oman aikansa julkisten kirjastojen joukossa eurooppalaisittainkin huomattava. Kirjaston kolme suurta salia ovat Suomen arkkitehtuurissa ylittämätön kokonaisuus, tieteelle omistettu yliopistollinen temppeli, jonka sisäänkäynti sijoittuu samaan aikaan rakennetun Nikolain kirkon, nykyisen Tuomiokirkon pääovea vastapäätä.
Kirjaston suuret salit ovat kaikki yhteydessä toisiinsa, sisääntulo johtaa suoraan rakennuksen keskipisteeseen, Kupolisaliin, ja jatkuu Rotunda-osaan ja Fabiania-rakennukseen. Kupolisaliin liittyvät nykyiset lukusalit, eteläsali ja pohjoissali. Salien pylväät on päällystetty stukkomarmorilla, kullakin salilla on oma sävynsä. Kupolisaliin lattia on kotimaista Lapin marmoria.
Vierailu kirjastossa
Kirjasto on yleensä avoinna arkisin Ma-Pe kello 9-18. [Aukioloajat]
Päällysvaatteet, sateensuojat, laukut ja kassit jätetään pohjakerroksen maksuttomaan vaatesäilytykseen. Kannettavan tietokoneen voi ottaa mukaan kirjaston tiloihin. Kirjaston lukusalit ovat hiljaisen työskentelyn tiloja. Mobiililaitteiden on oltava äänettömässä tilassa. Poistuthan lukusalista, mikäli joudut ottamaan puhelun vastaan.
Tehtävä 1: Astu Kansalliskirjastoon sisään ja mene musiikkikirjaston aulan näyttelyvitriinille, jonka sijainti löytyy kartasta reittipisteenä.
Ota valokuva valitsemastasi musiikkisoittimesta siten, että sinä itse, henkilökohtainen kätköilijänimimerkkisi tai maskottisi heijastuu peilikuvana vitriinin lasista. Älä käytä salamaa. Lisää ottamasi kuva löytölokkaukseesi. [Mallikuva]
Huom! Kuvan tarkoitus on todistaa että olet henkilökohtaisesti käynyt kätköllä. Mikäli käytät samaa kuvaa kuin joku toinen vierailija, niin mainitse lokitekstissä, mitä henkilökohtaista lasista heijastuneessa kuvassa näkyy.
Tehtävä 2: Mene ulos alkupisteeseen. Katso suoraan kohti kirjaston kaarevaa ulkoseinää ja etsi sinua lähimpänä oleva M-kirjaimella alkava kahdeksankirjaiminen sana.

Vastaukset voit lähettää vaihtoehtoisesti myös viestikeskuksen kautta. Molemmat tehtävät on suoritettava. Puutteelliset löydöt poistetaan.
