I attended school here for many years, but I discovered this spot when biking the greenways. This is my favorite musical piece. The best way to get this is by bike on the greenway, public parking will be a challenge.
Dies Irae: The "Dies irae" has been used in the Roman Rite Liturgy as the sequence for the Requiem Mass for centuries, as made evident by the important place it holds in musical settings such as those by Mozart and Verdi. It appears in the Roman Missal of 1962. As such, it is still heard in churches where the Tridentine Liturgy is celebrated. It also formed part of the pre-conciliar liturgy of All Soul's Day.
Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on April 1st, 1873, the 3rd son of a nobleman and a military man who was an amateur pianist. His mother started his piano lessons when he was 4. Sergei was supposed to be a military man, but lucky for us his father mismanged all the money he inherited and Sergei did not have the financial support needed for a military career.
Sergei studied at the Moscow Conservatory. His sister Yelena was an important musical influence, she introduced him to the work of Petyr Tchaikovsky. She died in 1885 at 18 from pernicious anemia. Tchaikovsky died in 1893 from cholera, his death left Sergei stunned.
Sergei worked throughout his life as a teacher and conductor to support his family. Sergei's first symphony was unsuccessful and he fell into a depression for 3 years. He would write his award winning 2nd symphony 12 years later, because he needed the money to support his family.
Sergei's use of the DIES IRAE is so lovely and striking that it has been replicated numerous times.
For example, Eric Carmen lifted the DIES IRAE out of Sergei's second symphony because he thought it was in the public domain, but it wasn't, so Sergei has song writing credit on Eric Carmen's hit song "All by Myself" (made more famous by Celine Dion's cover and David Foster's arrangement).
Sound tracks that use the Dies Irae: Star Wars, The Shining, Home Alone and many more.
This monument is for Sergei's last recital at the University of Tennessee Alumni Gym, February 17, 1943. To log this cache send me a photo of your gps with the DIES IRAE music on the monument.
