Geocache Description:

English version:

Kirke Værløse Kirke belongs to one of the oldest churches in Denmark. It is from the middle ages where the stone church is build surrounding a church made of wood between 1090 and 1135 - clear traces of holes have been found inside the church. The years are based on the fact that a coin was found under the floor dated to 1090 and inside the church frescoes were found which were painted by Jørlundeværkstedet which closed in 1135 (whitewashed now).

Originally there was an entrance for women at the north which is now hidden and at the entrance for the men at south, a porch was later built outside and that is still where the entrance is today.

Originally, people stood up in the church, women and men on opposite sides. Later, after the Lutheran reformation, pews were added to the church and the pulpit is from the mid-17th century, because now everyone had to be able to see and hear the priest.

The church tower was built approx. 300 years later and is built in monks' stone, as opposed to the church which is built in boulders which were probably gathered by the farmers in the fields.

The apse has a small circular window to the east, where the sun shines through at sunrise and magically shines into the church on the priest and congregation. It has been bricked up and was reopened during a restoration in 1973, where also the old altarpiece was replaced by Mogens Jørgensen's illuminated altarpiece.

Logging requirements:

You have to enclose two photos to your log, one from each waypoint:

  • Waypoint 1: Photo where your geo-name and the little circular window in apse are both visible
  • Waypoint 2: Photo where your geo-name and the clock on the church tower is visible through the old entrance at the north

You find examples from both places above.

- Have fun!
