Ballidu is a town in the Central Midlands division of the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, about 217 kilometres (135 mi) north of Perth. Ballidu is also 34 kilometres (21 mi) north of the town of Wongan-Hills which, along with a few other small towns such as Cadoux and Bindi Bindi make up the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu,.
The name Ballidu is a hybrid name, coming from "balli", a Noongar word meaning "on this side" or "in this direction", and "Duli" after a nearby rockhole. The townsite was gazetted in 1914, with street names of the original settlers. A primary school opened in the town on 4 September 1922, moving into permanent premises in 1924 and closing in 2016. Most of the streets in Ballidu are named after varieties of wheat.
Ballidu is a stop on the Wongan Hills to Mullewa railway line, which opened in 1915.
The bulk wheat bins in town opened in 1940. Currently the site consists of 1 horizontal shed, 2 circular cells and 11 Open Bulk Heads with a storage capacity of up to 206,000 tonnes of grain. We spent 2 months working at the CBH bin in Ballidu in 2024. We hope you enjoy your visit to Ballidu, there are only a couple of stores and a machinery museum.
Bike it to Ballidu was humbly conceived as a school fundraiser in 1999 by Matt Osborne, the former principal of Ballidu Primary School.
Soon enough the whole Wongan-Ballidu Shire was involved from local businesses offering sponsorship, to friends and family volunteering to help out. The local police and ambulance came on board to ensure everyone’s safety.
With fun and community spirit at its core Bike it to Ballidu – and the after party – quickly became a much loved and highly anticipated annual event on the local calendar. So much so now everywhere you drive in and around town there are bikes being made into art installations.
