Forgotten in the shadow of Walt Disney World, Vineland was a small community dating back to the late 1800s. Sweet potatoes were grown, and around 1890 the Florida Midland Railway was constructed with a station here called Englewood.
In 1912, a post office known as Orange Center opened and a small town developed. In 1918, the name was changed to Vineland to avoid confusion with Orange City. Vineland soon had a church, school, depot, and homes. The post office closed in 1940, and the tracks were removed around 1960, leaving Vineland to quietly fade away.
Little remains of the original town except for a hard-to-locate cemetery (hidden in the woods prior to the current land development) and the name it lended to several major roadways in the area (including Apopka-Vineland Road and Winter Garden-Vineland Road).
While only two Civil War Veterans' graves are marked, it is said that there were at least four other burials here, but have since been moved. Local Eagle Scouts and the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War recently restored the cemetery and erected the fence.
