City Park, centrally located in the heart of town, is a stunning park that boasts a diverse range of features. But this park has a big background. Initially set up as a Botanical Garden by the Launceston Horticultural Society, the park was subsequently handed over to the Launceston City Council in 1863. In 1850, the park is believed to have exhibited the last two captive Tasmanian Emus which is believed to have become extinct during the 1850s. City Park also holds the record for having the greatest number of captive Thylacines (aka Tassie Tiger) on display. Its believed that a total of 66 were displayed at the zoo between 1885 and 1933, although two were traded with Adelaide Zoo for two leopards in 1889.
These days, the attractions include the Japanese Macaque monkey enclosure (between 8am-4pm), the Conservatory, a duck pond, a chess board, a touring train, and a children's playground. You can easily spend hours exploring City Park and still have areas unseen, of which this cache may lead you to one.
