Geocache Description:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Josip Pelikan was Slovenian photographer of Czech origin, born on 9th of December 1885 in Trbiž, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and died on 18th of June 1977 in Celje, the city he marked with his photography. Pelikan's family had been photographers for three generations. They started photography in Prague, which at that time was considered to be a highly developed city for the photography. When a free space for the photographer appeared in Trbiž, they moved to this part of the Empire and young Josip learned the alphabet of photography from his father Anton. After his mother's death in 1892 and his father's remarriage in 1894, the family moved to Idrija. Josip began to learn more about his father's art of photography, which included not only the technique of using dry, factory-made plates, but also home-made, wet photographic plates (the collodion process), which gave the photograph a more beautiful tone. In the years 1905 to 1908, he further enriched his knowledge by studying with the top masters of photography in Graz, Vienna and Prague. After his military service, he met a girl at a Sokol performance in Brežice, whom he married in 1910 and founded a modest photography studio in Brežice. In the same year, he held a solo photographic exhibition in Idrija, and this is where his successful career began. Two years later, he built a new house and studio in Idrija and became independent. He was mobilized during the First World War and returned to Idrija after the war, but due to disagreements with the fascists, he moved across the state border to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, first to Žiri and from there to Osijek. After an unsuccessful start in Osijek, he worked for a few months in Brežice, but in 1920 he settled permanently in Celje, in the house of prof. Jarc, where it was - next to its courtyard side - the glass studio of the former Celje photographer Johann Martin Lenz. He bought the house and the studio and Celje became the centre of his photographic creativity until his death.

On the 4th of May 1910 he was issued with a photographic trade licence, and for 67 years he performed as a visual memory of his environment, most of that time in Celje, but in the mid-1920s he expanded his activities to Rogaška Slatina, Dobrna and Rimske Toplice. He educated many excellent photographers, and his extensive photographic opus covers all the major events of his time; the two world wars, the birth and fall of countries. In quieter times he often turned his attention to the beauty of nature - especially the mountains. He created portraits of prominent cultural figures, his motives were published as postcards and reproduced in books and magazines. Pelikan is also a pioneer of industrial and advertising photography in Slovenia. His extensive photographic legacy, which is preserved in parts by many institutions in Celje, and especially by the Museum of Recent History Celje, represents a true legend of Celje photography and is renowned for its extraordinary quality. Pelikan's studio (see reference point) is the only one in Slovenia that has been (as a museum) completely preserved.

Tasks:

1. Through the Message Centre let me know what is written on the rear light of the photographer's bicycle.

2. Attach a photo of yourself along with Pelikan to your logo – Pelikan from the Square Celjskih knezov (header coordinates), or optional also some other, if you can find him in Celje.

3. Josip Pelikan was a true master of photography. Do you know how to take a really good photo? Attach to your logo a photo taken on reference point (optional photo taken anywhere in Celje), which in your opinion will have a real artistic touch.

Entries without the appropriate attachments or without the answer to the question will be mercilessly deleted.
