Geocache Description:

The Penedo da Saudade lighthouse (better known as São Pedro de Moel lighthouse) was built in 1912, it is 32mts high and its light has a range of 55kms. The lighthouse can be visited every Wednesday afternoon. At the national level (including islands) there are only 3 lighthouses larger than the lighthouse of S.Pedro (lighthouse in Leça da Palmeira, lighthouse in Aveiro and lighthouse in Vila Real Santo António)

The term lighthouse comes from the Greek word Pharos, the name of the island near the city of Alexandria where the first lighthouse was built in 280 BC. Lighthouses were built to replace campfires and their purpose was to warn sailors who were approaching the coast and thus avoid shipwrecks. The lighthouses were built in a round shape to minimize the wind impact on the structure and are usually made up of the tower, the lighthouse keeper's house, the emergency generator house and the "casa da Ronca" (place where the audible warning devices that are used on foggy days are installed).

Although nowadays all boats are equipped with GPS technology, the headlights still continue to work to safeguard the safety of fishermen at night.

How to log the cache:
