Bei einem Spaziergang entlang der Augsburger Stadtmauer trifft man auch auf den Steinernen Mann (auf Augschburgerisch D’Stoinerne Ma) um den sich folgende Sage rankt:
Während des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs wurde das von Schweden besetzte Augsburg von kaiserlichen und bayerischen Truppen mit dem Ziel die Stadt auszuhungern belagert. Als nach einem halben Jahr die Hungersnot ausbrach und die Vorräte zur Neige gingen kam dem Bäckermeister Konrad Hacker am 22. März 1635 folgende Idee:
Er kratzte seine letzen Mehlreste zusammen und backte daraus einen großen Laib Brot. Diesen warf er von der Stadtmauer nach unten auf die Belagerer um zu signalisieren dass noch reichlich Brot in der Stadt sei.
Während dieser Aktion schossen die Belagerer auf den Bäcker worauf er eine Arm verlor. An dieser Verletzung verstarb der Bäcker wenige Tage später, aber sein Ziel war erreicht: Die Belagerung wurde aufgehoben.
Zu diesem Andenken ließen die Augsburger eine Figur des Bäckermeisters aufstellen. Es soll Glück bringen die Nase der Steinfigur zu berühren…

During a walk along the Augsburg city wall you will also come across the Stone Man (in Augsburg dialect: D'Stoinerne Ma) who is the subject of the following legend:
During the Thirty Years' War, Swedish-occupied Augsburg was besieged by imperial and Bavarian troops with the aim of to starve the city. When after famine broke out half a year later and supplies were running low, master baker Konrad Hacker had the following idea on 22 March 1635:
He scraped together last of his flour and used it to bake a large loaf of bread. He threw this down from the city wall onto the besiegers to signal that there was still there was still plenty of bread in the city.
During this action, the besiegers shot at the baker whereupon he lost an arm. The baker died from this injury a few days later, but his but his goal was achieved: the siege was lifted.
To commemorate this, the people of Augsburg had a statue of the master baker to commemorate this. It is said to bring good luck to touch the nose of the stone figure touch the nose of the stone figure...
