Lynx Lake Recreation Area

Lynx Lake is a 55-acre reservoir located within Prescott National Forest, approximately 5 miles east of Prescott, Arizona, in the Bradshaw Mountains. The lake is located at 5,530 feet elevation and is stocked for fishing. It is one of the most popular recreation areas in central Arizona. Mild weather, the cool ponderosa pine forest, trout fishing, boating, mountain hiking, horseback riding, archaeological sites, and bird watching attract visitors from throughout Arizona. The lake was formed in 1952, when a dam was put in Lynx Creek, 6 miles below Walker, Arizona. The southern parking lot has a boat launch.

Ecology

Animals native to the area include mule deer, bald eagles, osprey, and javelinas. Several species have been introduced, including rainbow trout, bullfrogs, and domestic ducks and geese. Arizona State Game and Fish Department periodically stock the lake with rainbow trout. Largemouth bass and crappie are also present in the lake. The lake is open all year.

Day-Use Fees

Day-use sites require a daily-use fee. Payment can be made with cash, check, or credit card at the North and South Shore information boards. Payment at one site allows use at all day-use sites on the Prescott National Forest for that day. Wednesdays are free. Senior passes allow free entry at any time. To purchase this or other passes, click on the following link:

The Cache

The posted coordinates bring you to a parking circle and some informational plaques that look out over the lake. Before answering the questions and taking a picture, look out at the lake from this spot, and you can't help but enjoy this peaceful place. From here, you can hike around the lake on a three-mile trail, or go as far as you like and return on the same trail. Whichever way you choose, you will be treated to a magnificent view of the forest and the lake. Hiking the trails is not required for this virtual cache.

Questions

1. On the plaque entitled "Wings and Water," what can be deadly to these magnificent birds?

2. On the plaque entitled "Ripples From a Lake," What happens when a lake suddenly appears in an arid landscape?

Picture
