The Wellington Cable Car is a funicular railway - ie it climbs a slope, has cars on both ends of a long steel cable and uses the weight of the descending car to offset most of the energy needed to lift the ascending car. It was built in 1902 to provide access to Kelburn, a new subdivision still in development. Now, as well as handling commuter traffic, it is provides an easy route to the Botanical Gardens and is also a tourist attraction in its own right.
To find the cable car at the bottom look for the rather unique signpost to Cable Car Lane (see the photo below). Ticketing facilities are also at the bottom - there is no ticketing at the top. At the top of the ride is a café, toilets, fantastic views and the rather excellent Cable Car Museum. In the museum you can see how the cable car worked with its three independant braking systems and see its history from the early days of its coal driven "weather vane" winch (why weather vane? Find the answer in the museum!) At the bottom is a main shopping street. There is a supermarket right beside Cable Car Lane.
This is the cable car I rode as a young lad. Love those outside seats!
They don't make them that way any more. 😞
