Geocache Description:

Founded in 1226 by Sir William Garbridge, enlarged in 1285 and 1290 then sadly dissolved in 1538 these remains have stood here for almost 800 years.

All that is left above ground now is a section of the south wall and the western alley of the Cloister, a doorway in the wall leads to a small excavated room containing mid 14th century wall tombs, this room is elaborately vaulted with traces of medieval wall paintings - these remains are scanty but include part of the only Vaulted Franciscan Cloister that still exists in England.

During the late 16th century the friary was leased out to trained bands, a civilian militia... and coincidentally it was the great grandfather of Oliver Cromwell to whom the Cloisters were granted to as part of the dissolution of the monasteries in 1538 under King Henry VIII rule.

In 1896 substantial ruins of the Priory Church were found buried underneath Queen street.

To claim this virtual please message or email the answer to the following question..

By the gate in the alley there is a notice board, bottom right on this sign there are two yellow warning triangles, what two types of hazard do they warn of?

Also please upload a photo of yourself, it does not need to be a photo of your face, your GPS or your cacher name will do and add it to your log.
