Tegenwoordig wordt veelal aangenomen dat de Duitser Johannes Gutenberg de uitvinder van de boekdrukkunst in het jaar 1452 in Europa is geweest.

On the Grote Markt stands the statue of Laurens Janszoon Coster, who for centuries was considered the inventor of book printing, especially in the Netherlands. Today it is generally believed that the German Johannes Gutenberg invented the book printing in Europe in 1452.
