Geocache Description:

Callinectes Douglassi

This 10’x7’x’5’ sculpture is one of the world’s largest stained glass sculptures that took over 5,500 man hours over a 14-month period to build and  weighs approximately 550 lbs.

The sculpture is of a Maryland Blue Crab and was designated as one of the state symbols in 1989

The scientific name, Callinectes Sapidus Rathbun, means “beautiful swimmer that is savory".

The stained glass sculpture was created in 1984 by local artist Jackie Leatherbury Douglass and her husband John and is owned by Anne Arundel County. It was crafted from 5,000 hand-blown stained glass pieces and a welded steel frame. The stained glass Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab sculpture has greeted passersby at several spots within BWI Marshall Airport since it began calling the airport home.

The sculpture was commissioned by Anne Arudnel County. As one of Maryland’s state symbols, the blue crab was an obvious choice.

Baltimore Sun article from 2000 describes it:

The result was more than just a fitting icon for Anne Arundel County, with 550 miles of heavily crabbed waterfront, and a capital city known as Crabtowne, and a newspaper nicknamed the Crab- wrapper.

This cache does not require going past a security check point and can be reached anytime.  It is located at the far right of the departure terminals, by the SouthWest counters

You need to message or email me the following answer and take a picture of yourself or something with your caching name in front of The Crab.

1.  There is a small gold tag on the right side of the Crab that has 6 lines of text, send me the last word in the 3rd line?

2.  Above the Crab is a fixture in the middle of the case.  How many round openings are there?

3.  Take a picture of yourself or something with your caching name on it, in front of The Crab and upload it to your cache log.
