Port Macquarie began it's life as a penal settlement, lasting from April 1821 to June 1832. The settlement peaked with 1500 convicts in 1825. Standing here at Gaol Point you are overlooking Town Beach, Mrs. York's Garden & the breakwall where the Hastings flows into the sea.
