Prezidentūros pastatas buvo pradėtas statyti 1846 m. Kaunui tapus Laikinąja sostine (1919–1939), visas politinis, ekonominis ir kultūrinis gyvenimas persikėlė čia. Prezidentūroje dirbo ir gyveno visi trys tuometiniai Lietuvos Respublikos prezidentai: Antanas Smetona, Aleksandras Stulginskis ir Kazys Grinius. 1923–1924 m., Aleksandro Stulginskio prezidentavimo metu, pastatas buvo remontuojamas. Pirmajame aukšte buvo įrengtas Prezidento šeimos butas. A. Smetonos prezidentavimo metu Prezidentūros teritorija buvo aptverta nauja tvora, kuri išliko iki šių dienų. Prezidento rūmuose pirmojo aukšto patalpos buvo skirtos darbui, antrajame aukšte buvo du salonai, skirti oficialiems priėmimams. Didesniajame vykdavo oficialūs valstybinių delegacijų priėmimai, užsienio diplomatai įteikdavo skiriamuosius raštus Prezidentui. Šiandien šiame pastate yra įsikūręs muziejus – Istorinės Lietuvos Respublikos Prezidentūra Kaune. Prezidentūros kiemelyje galima išvysti ten dirbusių Lietuvos Respublikos prezidentų skulptūras.
In 1918–1940 Lithuania was transformed from a province of the Russian Empire into equivalent European country. Kaunas, the former administrative centre of the province, became the temporary state capital. The former governor’s residence became the Presidential Palace. The owners of Neo-Baroque building, the construction of which was started in the middle of the 19th century in the territory of vegetable gardens of Jacobins’ monastery changed several times; however, the building has never lost its importance and exceptional role. All three presidents of the first Republic of Lithuania resided in this building: Antanas Smetona, Aleksandras Stulginskis and Kazys Grinius.
