This virtual cache is placed on Treaty 6 Territory which is also the homeland of the Métis people. We pay respect to the First Nations and Métis ancestors of this place and affirm our relationship with one another.
People have gathered here for over 6000 years. It was a place for the Cree, Assiniboine, Saulteaux, Dakota and Blackfoot people to meet, trade, hunt bison, gather food and herbs and find shelter. It is one of the oldest and most important archaelogical sites in Saskatchewan. Wanuskewin was designated as a Provincial Heritage Property in 1984 and a National Historic Site in 1986. Wanuskewin Heritage Park and the visitor centre were opened in 1992. Wanuskewin has been nominated and is being considered for designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A small herd of plains bison was reintroduced to Wanuskewin in 2019, and on April 22, 2021, the first calf was born here since 1876.
Wanuskewin's Mission: To advance the understanding and appreciation of the evolving cultures of the Northern Plains Indigineous peoples.
Wanuskewin's Vision: Wanuskewin will be the living reminder of the people's sacred relationship with the land.
