Børsen, the Danish Stock Exchange, was built between 1619 and 1623 on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen, Denmark. Initially and up until the 1800s, the ground floor and first floor were used as a marketplace with trading stalls, known as a Commodity Exchange. Subsequently, from 1974, the building housed the Copenhagen Stock Exchange (Københavns Fondsbørs). Børsen is considered one of the finest examples of Dutch Renaissance architecture in Denmark. The most iconic feature of Børsen was its twisted tower spire, known as ‘Dragespiret’ (Dragon Spire). Added in 1625, it was shaped like four dragon tails intertwining. The spire had three crowns at the top, symbolizing the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.
On the early morning of April 16, 2024, a fire broke out in Børsen, causing the Dragon Spire to collapse. Over half of the building was destroyed by the fire, including the roof and tower, and parts of the outer wall collapsed two days later.
