Bournemouth Water Lifts

The West Cliff Railway was opened four months after the East Cliff railway, on 1st August 1908. Although construction of the two lines was undertaken almost concurrently, there are subtle differences in the two systems.

The West Cliff track is 5ft 6inches, it has twin tracks with a length of 145ft. This funicular is extremely steep with the maximum gradient:- 1:1.42. Once powered by water it now has an electric motor power from the top station. Just a single cable runs over small support pulleys between the upper ends of the cars. A ladder for maintenance runs between the tracks.

It was once powered by similar specification winding motors, but the replacement at West Cliff Railway was made in 1962 by a 3 phase 28 h.p. model. It received the new aluminium passenger cars during the 1960s. In the 1990s it was upgraded with the installation of an electronic control system. Entrance buildings can be found at both ends of the line, with stepped concrete terracing either side of the tracks.

Bournemouth Goats

They can be seen on the stretch between West Cliff to Southbourne. Funding has come from a government agreement with Natural England. The council and a volunteer grazier, look after the herd, which includes several different breeds - Kashmir, Boer a South African breed, and feral goats. If you are interested in finding out more about the Bournemouth Goats, they have their own facebook social media page
