Malmö Central stod färdig 1858, två år efter det att järnvägen mellan Lund och Malmö invigdes första gången. Stationen låg då i stadens utkant men nära färjorna till Köpenhamn som gick från Inre hamnen alldeles framför stationsbyggnaden.

Idag har stationen tio spår, fyra av dem under mark och sex i den gamla banhallen ovan mark. År 2010 togs de fyra underjordiska spåren i bruk och Citytunneln invigdes. Därmed blev Malmö centralstation en genomgångsstation med högre tågkapacitet.

Centralhallen inhyser sedan 2011 en saluhall med ett tiotal restauranger och småbutiker.

Malmö Central Station was constructed in 1858, two years after the railway between Lund and Malmö was first inaugurated. The station was then located on the outskirts of the city but close to the ferries to Copenhagen that departed from the Inner Harbor right in front of the station building.

Today the station has ten tracks, four of them underground and six tracks in the old hall at gound level. In 2010, the four underground tracks were put into use and the Citytunneln was inaugurated. Malmö Central Station thus became a transit station with higher train capacity.

In 2011, the central hall was converted into a market with some ten restaurants and small shops.
