Glenhyrst was built on land previously owned by the Stratford family and named Glenhyrst after a family home in Scotland. Upon purchasing the land, Edmund Cockshutt kept the name and built a house. He also used the fifteen acre plot to create gardens, which he believed were best enjoyed when shared with others. He hung a sign "Visitors Welcome" and invited everyone to tour his gardens. Guests were also invited into his home to view his art collection. It was Edmund's wish to continue to share his love of art and gardening with others, and as such; the estate was donated to the City of Brantford in 1956. The Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant began operations in 1986.
The main attributes of this landscape include remarkable art sculptures and uniquely imported and historic trees, flowers, and plants. The cultural and historical significance is shared through the various art sculptures and the historic and diverse trees that originated from various places around the world from Cockshutt's beloved tree collection. There are many diverse trees such as the Douglas Fir, Weeping Willow, The Black Locust, Japanese Katsura, Tulip, Black Oak and many more. The landscape has undergone very little changes over the last hundred years as many efforts are made to preserve the historic landscape of Glenhyrst Gardens. The only changes to occur to Glenhyrst are the adding of art sculptures, planting more trees, plants, and flower beds. The historical significance of this landscape is protected and preserved by the City of Brantford.
Glenhyrst Art Gallery maintains a significant collection of more than 650 artworks and objects of historical importance. A selection of these, chosen by the curator, is displayed to the public once a year during the permanent collection exhibition.
There is no charge to walk around and enjoy the Gardens. There are a couple of parking areas within the grounds and the driveway connects up with a parking lot for the SC Johnson Trail. If you wish to visit the Art Gallery, please check for hours of operation.
