Tännforsen, som brukar kallas Sveriges största vattenfall, är lätt att besöka och njuta av. På vintern täcks Tännforsen av en vacker isskrud som kan möjliggöra en spännande promenad in under vattenfallet. I maj och juni är vattenflödet som högst och det fullkomligt dånar om fallet och kraften blir fysiskt kännbar. Som mest är flödet under vårfloden kring 400 kubikmeter vatten per sekund. När solen står högt och lyser på Tännforsen står regnbågen i vattenångan som bildas i vattenfallet. Om hösten omges fallet av klara höstfärger som tillsammans med en blå himmel och det skummande vita vattnet bjuder på hela färgskalan.
En enkel promenad
Till fallet går en vandringsslinga som är ganska bred och grusad. Från parkeringen vid Tännforsens turiststation kan du välja att gå den högra leden ner mot fallet, då får du uppleva att närma dig vattenfallet nedströms och möta den dundrande väggen framifrån, en mäktig upplevelse när det tornar upp sig framför en. Den här delen av leden är brant på sina ställen.
Väljer du istället att gå leden åt vänster från turiststationen kommer du fram till älven ovanför fallet och får följa med i vattnets riktning och först se hur det faller över kanten, något som brukar kittla i magen. Den här delen av leden har snällare lutning vilket gör den mer lättillgänglig. Oavsett vilken riktning du går så är det bara att följa den markerade rundan så kommer du tillbaka till parkeringen. Utmed stigen finns bänkar att sitta på, ta med något varmt att dricka och sitt en stund och ta in både fallet och trollskogen som omger det.
Trollskog med unika arter
Naturen kring Tännforsen är rik på en rad lavar, mossor och andra ovanliga arter, något som gett den ett skydd som Natura 2000-område. Tack vare den ständigt fuktiga luften trivs flera utrotningshotade arter just här. Det finns hela 21 rödlistade trädlevande lavar i området kring forsen, även en grupp kortvingar (en typ av skalbaggar) är specifikt knutna hit. Lavarna som klär träden med ett fint skägg bidrar till trollskogskänslan i området. Vänd på en mossklädd sten och titta efter, kan det vara ett stentroll?
Tännforsen – En plats i historien
Tännforsen började bli ett besöksmål redan år 1835 då Skalstugevägen till Norge invigdes av kung Karl XIV Johan. Besökare med tid och pengar att resa och uppleva nya platser kunde då ta en båttur över till norra sidan av fallet på det lugnare vattnet Tännsjön uppströms från forsen. Svenska Turistföreningen tog nästa steg och byggde inte bara bilväg fram till vattenfallet Tännforsen utan även en turiststation 1906. Nu växte platsen som besöksmål och gästboken på turiststationen fylldes av berättelser om gästernas upplevelser.
Sommaren 1953 utmanades vattenfallet av två äventyrare från Järpen. Calle Thoresson hade som mål att cykla över forsnacken på lina, med hjälp av Kjell Zetterström hängande i en vagga under cykeln och linan, som balans och motvikt. Dramatiken förstärktes av att linan slaknade just när de var mitt över fallet och Kjell delvis kom under vatten. Trots detta lyckades Calle hålla balansen och de klarade sig över till publikens lättnad.
På äldre fotografier av Tännforsen finns en stor sten mitt i vattenfallet. Det var Björnstenen, döpt efter sägnen om att en björn en gång skulle korsa fallet men fastnade i mitten. Björnstenen lossnade helt plötsligt under vårfloden 1992, utan att någon såg.
Likt flera andra vattenfall har Tännforsen hotats av vattenkraftsutbyggnad. Senast det hände var under 1940-talet då Statens Vattenfallsverk ville dämma upp vattnet. Folk som bodde i området protesterade och ville inte att fallet skulle torrläggas och tystna. Man gjorde hårt motstånd och lyckades 1971 få vattenfallet skyddat som naturreservat med syftet att bevara ett av Sveriges största outbyggda vattenfall. Tack vare deras insatser är området fortfarande ett väldigt populärt besöksmål.

Tännforsen, which is usually called Sweden's largest waterfall, is easy to visit and enjoy. In winter, Tännforsen is covered by a beautiful sheet of ice that can enable an exciting walk under the waterfall. In May and June, the water flow is at its highest and it absolutely roars about the falls and the force becomes physically felt. At most, the flow during the spring flood is around 400 cubic meters of water per second. When the sun is high and shining on Tännforsen, the rainbow is in the water vapor that forms in the waterfall. In autumn, the falls are surrounded by clear autumn colors which, together with a blue sky and the foaming white water, offer the entire color scale.
An easy walk
There is a hiking trail that is quite wide and gravelly to the falls. From the parking lot at the Tännforsen tourist station, you can choose to take the right trail down towards the fall, then you will experience approaching the waterfall downstream and meeting the thundering wall from the front, a powerful experience when it towers in front of you. This part of the trail is steep in places. If you instead choose to follow the trail to the left from the tourist station, you will arrive at the river above the fall and get to follow the direction of the water and first see how it falls over the edge, something that usually tickles the stomach. This part of the trail has a gentler slope which makes it more accessible. No matter which direction you go, just follow the marked round and you will get back to the car park. Along the path there are benches to sit on, bring something hot to drink and sit for a while and take in both the fall and the enchanted forest that surrounds it.
Magic forest with unique species
The nature around Tännforsen is rich in a range of lichens, mosses and other unusual species, something that has given it protection as a Natura 2000 area. Thanks to the constantly moist air, several endangered species thrive right here. There are a total of 21 red-listed arboreal lichens in the area around the rapids, also a group of shortwings (a type of beetle) are specifically linked here. The lichens that dress the trees with a fine beard contribute to the enchanted forest feel of the area. Turn over a moss-covered stone and look, could it be a stone troll?
Tännforsen - A place in history
Tännforsen began to become a destination as early as 1835 when the Skalstugevägen to Norway was inaugurated by King Karl XIV Johan. Visitors with the time and money to travel and experience new places could then take a boat trip over to the north side of the falls on the calmer waters of Tännsjön upstream from the rapids. The Swedish Tourist Association took the next step and built not only a road to the Tännforsen waterfall but also a tourist station in 1906. Now the place grew as a destination and the guest book at the tourist station was filled with stories about the guests' experiences. In the summer of 1953, the waterfall was challenged by two adventurers from Järpen. Calle Thoresson's goal was to cycle over the rapids on a rope, with the help of Kjell Zetterström hanging in a cradle under the bike and the rope, as balance and counterweight. The drama was enhanced by the fact that the line slackened just when they were in the middle of the fall and Kjell partially came under water. Despite this, Calle managed to keep her balance and they made it over to the crowd's relief.
In older photographs of Tännforsen, there is a large stone in the middle of the waterfall. It was the Bear Stone, named after the legend that a bear once crossed the fall but got stuck in the middle. The Björnstenen suddenly dislodged during the spring flood in 1992, without anyone noticing. Like several other waterfalls, Tännforsen has been threatened by hydropower development. The last time it happened was in the 1940s, when the Norwegian Water Agency wanted to dam up the water. People living in the area protested and did not want the case to be dropped and kept quiet. They put up strong resistance and in 1971 succeeded in getting the waterfall protected as a nature reserve with the aim of preserving one of Sweden's largest undeveloped waterfalls. Thanks to their efforts, the area is still a very popular tourist destination.
