Geocache Description:

Het schijnvliegveld van de Groenenhoek

English google translation below.

The Groenenhoek dummy airfield

A concrete bunker suddenly appears in a meadow at Groenenhoek on the natural border between Wilrijk, Hemiksem and Aartselaar. This is a reminder of a Wilrijk airfield that was mainly intended to mislead soldiers.

Anyone walking or cycling along the Geitenpad will come across a concrete bunker in a meadow on the Klaverbladdreef/Groenenhoek. The surrounding meadow had been set up as an airfield by the Belgian army in the run-up to this conflict.

Paved, sown and equipped with beacons, it was intended to provide the Belgian air force with an alternative option during a military conflict. After the capitulation on 28 May 1940, Belgian soldiers made the landing strip unusable with explosives.

In 1940, the Germans restored the Wilrijk landing strip and, in anticipation of the Battle of Britain, expanded the site into a full-fledged airfield.  The plans were changed while the works were still being carried out. The Wilrijk airfield would henceforth function as a dummy airfield for the Deurne airfield, which was much more important to the Germans.

Using wooden dummy planes, lighting beacons and the construction of the same concrete bunker as the command bunker at Deurne, they tried to mislead the Allies and thus provoke a diversionary bombardment on Wilrijk. However, it did not get that far. As the liberation of Antwerp approached, the Germans placed a series of poles at strategic locations, including the dummy airfield. These poles, popularly known as ‘Rommel’s asparagus’, were intended to make an airborne landing impossible.

It is said that the English bombed these types of airfields (with wooden planes), of which there are several in Belgium, with wooden bombs to laugh at the Germans. They called this action “wood for wood”. Are these cowboy stories or real ones?  Then delve into the books or the internet.

LOGGING:

If you want to log this Virtual validly, take a picture of yourself at the board, recognizable or with a nickname. On the board you place an airplane on the landing site. So don't forget to bring your airplane or be creative. Logs that do not comply will be deleted.  The plane in my picture is about 40 years old, but all planes are good.
