On this site the first school house in Monroe County was errected in 1794. Simon and Israel Stone gave three acres of land for the nearby cemetery to be established and for a log schoolhouse to be built on this hill. This was not a free school. It was built by subscription with the settlers taking as many shares as they had children in school. The tuition was $1.00 per child per semester - a large sum in those days. The school teacher's salary was $12 per month. Students lived close to the school since it was dangerous to walk any distance in those days because of wolves and bears in the forest and wooded areas.
That log shoolhouse was razed in 1806 and was replaced by a frame schoolhouse which was eventually replaced by this present brick schoolhouse which you see before you today. This brick school house was erected in 1857. It was in use until around 1946 when the Pittsford system was centralized.
I chose this one room school house for my virtual cache in memory of my Grandmother and Great Aunt who both taught in a one room school house on the other side of the state.
