The Hole in the Wall has become a popular destination while people visit the Alberni Valley due the beautiful pictures that can be captured there. The Hole isn't the result of geologic processes, but was carved through the shale rock face to deliver water from Roger Creek to Port Alberni by a wooden pipeline. The pipeline no longer exists, but the opening creates a picturesque environment as a stream cascades into the crystal-clear waters of Roger Creek while the rain forest canopy reflects on its surface.
Access to the Hole in the Wall is in close proximity to Highway 4, so please exercise caution while crossing or walking alongside the highway. The hike is less than 2 kilometres round trip with less than 50 m of elevation change. Remenants of the old pipeline are visible as you approach Roger Creek, keep a lookout for the wires that went around the wood staves.
