Om Sten Sturemonumentet
Högst uppe på Kronåsen och längs Gula stigen står ett lite undangömt monument över Sten Sture den äldre, Sveriges kung 1470-1497. Monumentet fyller 100 år i år (2025), och varför inte fira det med en virtuell geocache?
Skulpturen, som är placerad på en 28 meter hög pelare, är skapad av en av Sveriges främsta skulptörer, Carl Milles, och i år (2025) har den tronat över Uppsala i hundra år. Det var Uppsala studentkår som redan 1871 kom med idén att man skulle skapa ett Sten Sturemonument. Det låg i tiden att varje stad skulle ha en stor skulptur över sina hjältar och Uppsalastudenterna hade inspirerats av Stockholm som redan uppfört flera liknande monument.
När det kom till frågan om hur man skulle betala för det tycktes det självklara svaret för Uppsalastudenterna vara sång. Kommunen stod bara för marken, så all finansiering kom från privata donatorer. Studenterna åkte därför land och rike runt med kören Allmänna sången och samlade in pengar.
Carl Milles, som skapat statyn, ses idag som en av Sveriges främsta skulptörer och under 1900-talet ville var och varannan svensk stad ha en egen Milles-staty på sitt torg. När studentkåren utlyste en tävling om vem som skulle få skapa Sten Sturemonumentet var Milles fortfarande relativt okänd och han hamnade därför på en snopen fjärdeplats. Bland studenterna hade det dock uppstått en Millesvurm och en namninsamling startades för att låta honom ta över uppdraget.
För Millesmonumentet dröjde det hela 54 år att gå från idé till verklighet. När det väl invigdes 1925 var det med pompa och ståt och finbesök från kung Gustav V. Monumentet blev också Milles stora genombrott.
Vem var Sten Sture?
Den som kan sin historia minns att det finns två av dem: Sten sture den yngre och Sten Sture den äldre. Det är den äldre som står på Uppsalamonumentet. Han ledde motståndsrörelsen mot Kalmarunionen, var delaktig i grundandet av Uppsala universitet och regerade över Sverige mellan 1470 och 1497.
Länge sågs han som en hjälte som befriat svenskarna från danskarnas tyranni och det var också därför som Uppsala studentkår ville ha en staty över honom. Men i själva verket var det ingen strid mellan svenskar och danskar utan mellan anhängare och motståndare till unionen och svenskar fanns på båda sidor i kampen. Forskare i modern tid menar att han var en kallt beräknande maktmänniska och opportunist.
Loggkrav:
För att få logga cachen som hittad ska du till din logg bifoga ett foto av dig själv (ansiktet behöver inte synas) eller ditt geocachingnamn med monumentet i bakgrunden. Det räcker inte att fundamentet är med, utan själva statyn på toppen måste synas. Fotot måste vara taget ungefär från cachens koordinater. Det gills alltså inte att ta fotot någon annanstans i staden, även om monumentet syns i bakgrunden. Loggar som inte uppfyller kravet kan komma att raderas utan förvarning. About the Sten Sture Monument
At the top of Kronåsen and along Gula stigen (the Yellow Path) stands a slightly hidden monument to Sten Sture the Elder, King of Sweden 1470-1497. The monument turns 100 years old this year (2025), and why not celebrate with a virtual geocache?
The sculpture, which is placed on a 28 meter high pillar, was created by one of Sweden's foremost sculptors, Carl Milles, and this year (2025) it has been looking out over Uppsala for one hundred years. It was the Uppsala student union that already in 1871 came up with the idea to create a Sten Sture monument. It was popular in that time that every city would have a large sculpture of its heroes, and the Uppsala students had been inspired by Stockholm, which had already erected several similar monuments.
When it came to the question of how to pay for it, the obvious answer for the Uppsala students seemed to be singing. The municipality was only providing the grounds, so all funding came from private donors. The students therefore traveled around the country with the choir Allmänna sången and collected money.
Carl Milles, who created the statue, is seen today as one of Sweden's foremost sculptors, and during the 20th century every Swedish city wanted its own Milles statue in its square. When the student union announced a competition about who would get to create the Sten Sture monument, Milles was still relatively unknown and he therefore ended up in a poor fourth place. Among the students, however, a Milles craze had arisen and a petition was started to let him take over the assignment.
For the Milles monument, it took all of 54 years to go from idea to reality. Once it was inaugurated in 1925, it was with pomp and circumstance and a special visit from King Gustav V. The monument was also Milles' big breakthrough.
Who was Sten Sture?
Anyone who knows their Swedish history remembers that there are two of them: Sten Sture the Younger and Sten Sture the Elder. It is the elder that stands on the Uppsala monument. He led the resistance movement against the Kalmar Union, was involved in the founding of Uppsala University and ruled Sweden between 1470 and 1497.
For a long time he was seen as a hero who freed the Swedes from the tyranny of the Danes and that was also why the Uppsala student union wanted a statue of him. But in fact it was not a battle between Swedes and Danes but between supporters and opponents of the union and Swedes were on both sides of the fight. Researchers in modern times believe that he was a coldly calculating power man and opportunist.
Logging requirements:
In order to log this cache as found, you have to attach a photo of yourself (face does not need to be shown) or your geocaching nickname with the monument visible in the background. It is not enough if the base is in the photo, but the actual statue at the top must be visible. Also note that the photo should be taken from the cache coordinates, not from anywhere else in the city even if the monument can be seen from there. Logs that do not fulfill the requirement may be deleted without notice. If you cannot upload the photo immediately, please write in your log when you will be able to do it.
