Geocache Description:

Welcome to Lock 30 Park.

Much of what we call the Erie Canal is actually three different canal projects. The original Erie Canal (AKA Clinton's Big Ditch) began in 1817. This canal only measured 40 feet wide and 4 feet deep. Starting in 1835, the Enlarged Canal project expanded the canal to 70 feet wide and 7 feet deep. Much of the original canal was used, but in parts, new sections where constructed. Then starting in 1903, the present day Barge Canal was constructed. This new canal measured 120' wide and 12' deep, but it abandoned or destroyed over half of the original canal system. In 1992, the Barge Canal name reverted back to Erie Canal.

In Macedon, all three canal systems can still be observed. As you walk out to the posted coordinates you'll be walking between the original Erie / Enlarged Canal to the south and the current Barge Canal to the north. To the east, the original Erie Canal would have been to the north of the current Barge Canal (see Sightseeing Waypoints).

The posted coordinates is one of the only places along the canal you can stand and see all three canals systems. There is a sign that points out all three channels.

Your task is to email me the answers to the first two questions that can be found at the posted coordiantes. The third question can be answered on the way back to parking:

1) Look at the sign at the posted coordinates and tell me the three years on the sign.
2) At posted is a large wooden arch facing the canal. What is written on this sign?
3) At Virtual Stop 2 (and elsewhere in the park) are large wooded boxes. What were their purpose?

For addition sightseeing (don't worry, they are optional stops) I've included coordinates for the abandoned Enlarged Lock 60, the Towpath Change Bridge #39 and the still in use Lock 61 from the Enlarged Canal.
