Discover the Dale Hawerchuk Memorial Statue
Located in the heart of the Sports, Hospitality, and Entertainment District of downtown Winnipeg, the Dale Hawerchuk Memorial Statue pays tribute to one of the most beloved hockey heroes in the city’s rich sporting history. Standing proudly near Canada Life Centre and True North Square, this life-sized bronze sculpture captures Hawerchuk’s dynamic presence and unwavering determination on the ice.
A Legend in Winnipeg Jets History
Drafted first overall in 1981, Dale Hawerchuk made an immediate impact with the Winnipeg Jets, recording over 100 points in his rookie season and earning the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. During his nine seasons with the Jets, Hawerchuk became the team’s cornerstone player, notching numerous 100-point campaigns and setting franchise scoring records. His style, leadership, and sportsmanship inspired both teammates and fans, establishing him as one of the greatest Jets of all time. Hawerchuk was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in his second year of eligibility in 2001.
A Lasting Legacy
Unveiled in 2022, the statue honours Hawerchuk’s enduring influence on the city’s sporting culture. Whether you’re a lifelong hockey enthusiast or simply exploring downtown Winnipeg, take a moment to admire this fitting tribute, reflect on Hawerchuk’s remarkable career, and celebrate the legacy of a true Winnipeg icon.
The Virtual Requirements
To log this virtual cache please complete the following and email the responses to me. Do not post answers in your log.
1) When standing at the posted coordinates, look at the southwest side of the monument. You will see a sign with some numbers and words. What is the second number on the sign? (Eg: if you see 23 and then 42, 42 would be the correct response.) What is the last word on the sign?
2) What, if anything, is written on the bronze base of the statue?
3) Several metres to the southeast of the statue there is a support column for the building and overhead walkway. A sign on the column lists several corporations and organisations. Some of these are listed by their initials. The first entity listed by its initials is True North Square, listed as "TN SQ." What is the last organisation on the sign listed by its initials?
4) Post a photo of yourself, or of a personal item, at the front of the statue with True North Square in the background. You are not required to post a photo of your face, but a photo with a personal item such as a sign with your caching name on it must be included. It must be a new photo, not one which was previously taken.
Logs not fulfilling the requirements will be deleted.
