Chafariz do Neptuno
No actual Largo Família Soares Pinto fica localizado o mais emblemático chafariz da cidade. Neste local, um dos mais antigos da urbe, entre 1695 e 1867 existiram a casa e o celeiro do castelo.
A praça foi aberta em 1876, sendo pouco depois construído o chafariz para resolver o problema de abastecimento de água na cidade. O Chafariz do Neptuno, inaugurado em 1877, seria então o primeiro ponto de abastecimento público de água em Ovar.
De traça clássica, o chafariz é encimado por uma estátua de Neptuno, o deus romano do mar, também considerado o deus dos rios e fontes, segurando na mão direita o seu tradicional tridente.
Diz-se que o tridente era um símbolo da tripla virtude da água, já que esta fluía, era fértil, e era potável.
Durante o ano de 2024, o Neptuno de Ovar perdeu o seu tridente. Porventura até fará sentido porque há muito que a água não flui neste chafariz, e quando isso acontece não é potável...
Durante o Carnaval de 2025, o rei do Carnaval de Ovar restituiu a Neptuno o seu tridente. Ficou também a saber-se que foi realizada uma análise do estado de conservação deste monumento, e está a ser preparada uma proposta de intervenção de conservação e restauro do conjunto do chafariz que "permita a resolução de inúmeros problemas estruturais e que devolva toda a sua integridade e configuração original". The most emblematic fountain in the city is located in the current Família Soares Pinto square. In this location, one of the oldest in the city, between 1695 and 1867 there was the castle's house and barn.
The square was created in 1876, and, shortly after, the fountain was built to solve the city's water supply problem. Neptune's Fountain, inaugurated in 1877, would then become the first public water supply in Ovar.
With a classic design, the fountain is topped by a statue of Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, also considered the god of rivers and fountains, holding his traditional trident in his right hand.
It is said that the trident was a symbol of the triple virtue of water, as it flowed, was fertile, and was drinkable.
During 2024, Ovar's Neptune lost his trident. Maybe it even makes sense because water hasn't flowed in this fountain for a long time, and when it does, it's not drinkable...
During the 2025 Carnival, the King of Ovar Carnival returned Neptune's trident. It was also announced that an analysis of the monument's conservation status was conducted, and a proposal for conservation and restoration of the fountain complex is being prepared to "resolve numerous structural problems and restore its full integrity and original configuration." We await further developments.
