I have always been fascinated by shipwrecks. As a kid I loved climbing over them. Now it's for their history.
The beach below, which was later named Dicky Beach after this ship, was the resting place of SS Dicky until 2015 when it was removed by the council.
SS Dicky's final trip began on 1st February 1893, when it left Rockhampton for Brisbane, after dropping off food and supplies for central Queensland.
The vessel struck heavy weather after crossing the Wide Bay bar, the ocean waters between Fraser Island and the mainland, and could not turn back.
Captain John Beattie was forced to beach SS Dicky to avoid hitting the rocks of Moffat Beach. The loss of SS Dicky was deemed to be the result of a combination of bad weather and poor judgment by the crew.
In 2015 the council removed the wreck from the beach as it was deemed a risk to public safety, and at danger of being lost forever.
These information panels and area upgrade was completed in early 2024.
In order to log this cache answer the following questions, the answers to which can be found on these information panels:
1) How wide was the S.S. Dicky?
2) What was the maximum number of elephants the S.S. Dicky could carry?
3) What is the brother's name looking through the portal.
4) To the right of the portal in Q3 there is a sewer cover on the ground. What is written on the bottom line under DUCTILE 28KG?
(checked on this 16/3/25 and there is a tree/bush that is govering the cover but is easily lifted to get the required info)
