Geocache Description:

Yosemite National Park is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.  However, during certain times of the year a reservation is required to drive through and visit the park.  Check the National Park website at https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/hours.htm for more detailed information.

The Exploration Center (formerly named Visitor Center) is a wonderful place to visit and learn more about the park.  The hours of operation are 9 am to 5 pm daily.

Inside the Yosemite Exploration Center there is so much to look at and information to be learned!! This virtual is about President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir.  Find the special display about John Muir to get credit for this virtual.

President Theodore Roosevelt was an outdoorsman, everyone knows that. But did you know he once went camping with John Muir in Yosemite? Why? Because Muir was a famous naturalist, and Roosevelt wanted to know more about America's wilderness.

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt ditched his secret service detail to go camping in the woods of Yosemite with celebrated naturalist John Muir. Through his writings, Muir taught the importance of experiencing and protecting our natural world. That camping trip changed the face of conservation in the United States.

Not many people know the story but they camped by themselves in the uncharted woods of Yosemite. The two men saw sights and held discussions that would ultimately lead to the establishment of our National Parks. President Roosevelt worked very hard afterward to preserve the nation's natural treasures.

To claim this virtual cache, please post a photo of yourself at the bronze statue of John Muir sitting on a rock located inside the visitor center. It has recently been moved to the area by the climbing exhibit.    If you are camera shy, just put your caching name on a piece of paper and take a photo of it next to the monument.

I hope you take the time to read more about it at the wonderful display.
