"Backsteingotik in Wismar"
St.-Marien-Kirche
Die Marienkirche (auch Sankt Marienkirche) im Zentrum der Altstadt von Wismar, ist die höchste der drei Stadtkirchen. Der Turm ist stolze 80,5 Meter hoch und die Höhe des Mittelschiffgewölbes betrug 32,2 Meter.Sie war Hauptpfarrkirche und Ratskirche der Marktstadt und sie gehört zu den ältesten Bauwerken der Hansestadt.
Die Pfarrkirche St. Marien wird erstmals 1250 erwähnt.Dabei handelte es sich vermutlich um einen Holzbau, der in den Jahren von 1260 bis 1280 durch Ziegel ersetzt wurde.
Von 1339 bis 1508 erfolgte der Umbau der St.-Marien-Kirche nach dem Vorbild der Lübecker Marienkirche als siebenjochige, querschifflose Basilika.
Der Unterbau mit den beiden zweijochigen Seitenkapellen stammt noch von diesem frühgotischen Vorgängerbau. Er zeugt von den beachtlichen Ausmaßen, die die ehemalige Kirche gehabt haben muss.
Reicher Baudekor aus Glasurstein schmückt die vier Schildgiebel der sich durchkreuzenden Satteldächer. Ein Blitzschlag zerstörte 1539 den ursprünglichen achteckigen Turmhelm. Daraufhin erhielt der Turm einen Dachreiter, der 1661 bei einem Orkan heruntergerissen wurde.
Am 14.April 1945 wurde Wismar durch einen Bombenangriff schwer getroffen und das gotische Viertel sehr beschädigt. Auch das Mittelschiff der Marienkirche wurde dabei leider vollständig zerstört, nur der Turm blieb erhalten.
Jahrelang kämpften die Bürger Wismars für den Wiederaufbau der Marienkirche, doch 1960 wurden die Reste des Mittelschiffs gesprengt und abgetragen.
Am Dach des Turmes und an der Uhrenanlage wurden zwischen 1978 und 1981 umfangreiche Rekonstruktionsarbeiten durchgeführt. Das Glockenspiel lässt um 12:00, 15:00 und 19:00 Uhr einen der vielen Choräle erklingen.
In den vergangenen Jahren wurde mit Mitteln von Stadt, Land, Bund, Deutscher Stiftung Denkmalschutz und mit Spenden engagierter Bürger der verbliebene Turm geschlossen und mit Installationen soweit ausgerüstet, dass wieder eine Nutzung für Veranstaltungen möglich ist. Der Grundriss des ehemaligen Kirchenschiffes wurde durch niedrige Mauern wieder sichtbar gemacht.
Selbstverständlich gibt es an der Marienkirche viel zu entdecken, zu erfahren,zu erkunden und sogar selbst zu gestalten.
Einen Einblick in mittelalterliche Bautechniken und die gesellschaftsgeschichtliche Bedeutung der Nordeuropäischen Backsteinbaukunst erfährt der Besucher in der Ausstellung "Wege zur Backsteingotik" im Kirchturm von St. Marien. Dort wird auch ein Jung und Alt begeisternder Trickfilm in 3D-Technik über den Bau der St.-Marien-Kirche gezeigt. Der Film ist etwa zwölf Minuten lang und drei Mal pro Stunde zu sehen.
In der Ziegelscheune gegenüber des Turms könnt ihr selbst Hand anlegen: Formt doch einfach selbst einmal einen Stein. Im Tretrad,was bis letztes Jahr noch funktionierte, konnte man testen wie anstrengend die Arbeit der Kirchenerbauer war!
Ein Besuch lohnt sich somit auf jeden Fall.

Vorführungen oder Turmbesichtungen können einen kleinen Unkostenbeitrag von max. 3 € zum Erhalt der Marienkirche kosten. Um Spenden wird natürlich ebenfalls gebeten.
Alle Einnahmen dienen ausschließlich dem Erhalt und der Restauration unserer schönen Marienkirche.
In den Wintermonaten kann es dazu kommen das keine Turmbesteigungen machbar sind.
Öffnungszeiten und Turmbesteigungen können je nach Witterungslage varieren.

3. Mache ein Foto !!!!
Es befindet sich auf dem begehbaren Teil des Grundrisses vom Kirchenschiff eine große Bronze Skulpture mit 4 Personen bei einem sportlichen ungleichen Wettkampf. Unterstütze die benachteiligte Person sichtbar mit vollem körperlichen Einsatz und lasse ein Foto mit oder ohne GPS von Dir und der Skulpture bei Eurem Wettkampf machen.
Ihr braucht auf dem Foto nicht erkennbar sein , aber es muss ersichtbar sein das ihr eine sportliche Figur macht und die benachteiligte Person unterstützt ! Alternativ natürlich auch an anderen Stellen des Ortes, mit Hintergrund der St. Marienkirche .

“Brick Gothic in Wismar”
St. Mary's Church
The Marienkirche (also Sankt Marienkirche) in the center of the old town of Wismar is the highest of the three city churches. The tower is an impressive 80.5 meters high and the height of the central nave vault was 32.2 meters. It was the main parish church and council church of the market town and is one of the oldest buildings in the Hanseatic city.
The parish church of St. Marien was first mentioned in 1250. It was probably a wooden building that was replaced by brick between 1260 and 1280.
From 1339 to 1508, St. Mary's Church was rebuilt based on the model of Lübeck's St. Mary's Church as a seven-bay, transeptless basilica.
The substructure with the two two-bay side chapels comes from this early Gothic predecessor building. It bears witness to the considerable dimensions that the former church must have had.
Rich architectural decoration made of glazed stone adorns the four shield gables of the intersecting gable roofs. A lightning strike destroyed the original octagonal spire in 1539. The tower then received a roof turret, which was torn down in a hurricane in 1661.
On April 14, 1945, Wismar was badly hit by a bomb attack and the Gothic quarter was badly damaged. Unfortunately, the central nave of St. Mary's Church was also completely destroyed, only the tower remained.
For years, the citizens of Wismar fought to rebuild St. Mary's Church, but in 1960 the remains of the central nave were blown up and demolished.
Extensive reconstruction work was carried out on the roof of the tower and the clock system between 1978 and 1981. The carillon plays one of the many chorales at 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
In recent years, with funds from the city, state, federal government, German Foundation for Monument Protection and donations from committed citizens, the remaining tower was closed and equipped with installations to the extent that it can be used for events again. The floor plan of the former nave was made visible again by low walls.
Of course, there is a lot to discover, experience, explore and even create yourself at St. Mary's Church.
Visitors can gain an insight into medieval construction techniques and the socio-historical significance of Northern European brick architecture in the exhibition “Paths to Brick Gothic” in the church tower of St. Marien. A 3D animated film about the construction of St. Mary's Church will also be shown there, which will delight young and old alike. The film is about twelve minutes long and can be seen three times per hour.
In the brick barn opposite the tower you can lend a hand: just shape a stone yourself. On the pedal bike, which was still working until last year, you could test how strenuous the work of the church builders was!
A visit is definitely worth it.

Demonstrations or tower tours can cost a small contribution towards the maintenance of St. Mary's Church of a maximum of €3. Of course, donations are also requested.
All proceeds are used exclusively for the preservation and restoration of our beautiful St. Mary's Church.
In the winter months it may not be possible to climb the tower.
