According to the local Historical Society a total of 83 men from the local area enlisted for service in WW1 and eight did not return. Two veterans later died from war related injuries and illness and are commemorated on the town cenotaph. Unlike other towns, South West Rocks has also commemorated these ten soldiers by metal tablets fixed to headstone-like concrete blocks on the roadside in Memorial Avenue. These local monuments provide an opportunity for family and friends to mark the passing of loved ones. When the monuments were installed in 1927 a Norfolk Island pine tree was planted near each tablet, sadly only two remain today. Each tablet now has a NZ Christmas Bush nearby.
