Back in 1911, on the morning of the 9th February, the Walsh family gathered on a field in this location. Vivian Walsh was at the controls of a biplane called the Manurewa. He rose in the air to the height of about 20 feet (approx 6 metres) and flew for more than 300 yards (approx 275 metres). Within New Zealand, this was the first successful aeroplane flight that was observed and recorded.

This photo shows Brothers Leo Walsh (born in England) and Vivian Walsh (born in New Zealand after the family emigrated) who built this British-designed Howard Wright biplane from imported parts. They flew it at Auckland on 5 February 1911 – the first officially-recorded flight in New Zealand.
