Welcome to Horseshoe Bluff, part of the Mines of Spain. This has been one of my favorite spots in Iowa since I first hiked here around 15 years ago. This virtual cache will take you on a hike through this unique area. The walk is just around a mile loop. It does have some rocky terrain and can be icy in the winter. Start at the parking coordinates and take the trail to the bluff area.
The bluff was created around 10,000 to 14,000 years ago with help from glacial melting. In the 19th century, the middle of the bluff was removed as the area was mined for its rich lead ore, leaving the cliffs we see today.
To log this virtual, you'll need to visit the listed waypoints and send me a message with the answers to questions 1-3.
1. Posted coordinates: On the sign labeled "Geology" at the overlook, Galena Group dolomites accumulated how many years ago?
2. Waypoint 2 (N 42° 27.800′ W 90° 38.163′) takes you to the wooden stairs (on the north side) that go between the middle and lowest levels. Count the number of stairs (including the landings).
3. Waypoint 3 (N 42° 27.727′ W 90° 38.055′) takes you to the amphitheater. Count the number of brown metal posts you can see from the coordinates. (No trickery here, all should be very obvious.)
4. Take a photo somewhere along your hike through Horseshoe Bluff and post it with your log. It can include you, or a personal item, or your name on a piece of paper.....something to show you were here.
