The 12th Man
On January 2, 1922, Texas A&M played Centre College in the Dixie Classic in Dallas. After numerous injuries to the Aggie team, Coach Dana X. Bible called E. King Gill '24 from the stands. Gill, a basketball player and former football team member, suited up. He never entered the game, but his willingness to support the team provided inspiration for victory. The strong support of Aggies for their teams keeps alive that special part of the Aggie Spirit known as the 12th man Tradition.
Gill’s willingness to serve his team in 1922 has been passed down through generations of Aggies for over 100 years, as Texas A&M’s student section stands together during entire football and basketball games, ready to enter the game if needed. At home football games, an average of 38,000 student attendees can be seen representing the 12th Man.
The power of the 12th Man is demonstrated in the unity, loyalty and willingness of Aggies to serve when called to do so. It may be most visible on gamedays, but students also embrace this spirit through generosity and service to their peers, community and the world. Texas A&M has become known as the "Home of the 12th Man," a name that embraces Gill’s simple gesture of service.
I am a proud member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Class of '93 and the 12th man is one of my favorite tradtitions.
To get credit for this virtual, you must take a picture of yourself with the 12th man statue of E. King Gill with the stadium, Kyle Field, in the background and post it with your log. EACH LOG MUST HAVE A PICTURE, EVEN IF IT IS A GROUP PICTURE!
Parking is somewhat difficult on campus, so I have included two spots where you can potentially park. Please pay attention to parking signs and when you can park there. During certain times, like home football games, it will be a LOT harder to get this one by parking close by.
Again, to get credit, you must take a picture with the 12th man statue with Kyle Field in the background.
If you don't want your face in the picture, you can have any body part (thumbs up works!) or a piece of paper with your geocaching name on it, but it MUST have the 12th man statue with Kyle Field in the background.
Prior pictures DO NOT count! I go by this statue frequently and will be able to tell if your picture is current.
Any logs with out a picture will be deleted. Any logs with pictures that don't have the 12th man statue and Kyle Field with either you, a body part or your geocaching name will be deleted. Please don't armchair this virtual, because your log will be deleted. (If you would rather message me your pic than posting it in your log, that is fine)
Thanks for visiting the 12th man and Gig 'em!!
