Her på Bjerkebæk bodde en av Norges fremste forfattere, Sigrid Undset (1882–1949) mens hun skrev romanene som ga henne Nobelpris i litteratur i 1928. Stedet åpnet som museum i 2007 og er gjenskapt slik det så ut på 1930-tallet.
Middelalderromanene om Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1922) og Olav Audunssøn (1925-1927) skrev hun på Bjerkebæk.
Sigrid Undset konverterte til katolisismen i 1924. Dette gjenspeiles i en rekke essays og nåtidsromaner som hun skrev på 1930- og 1940-tallet.
I 1940 måtte Sigrid Undset forlate Norge på grunn av hennes aktive motstand mot nazismen. Hun bodde i USA under hele krigen og kjempet utrettelig for Norge og de allierte i artikler og foredrag. Hun engasjerte seg også for jødenes skjebne. Etter krigen vendte hun tilbake til Bjerkebæk som var vandalisert av tyskerne.

One of Norway's foremost writers, Sigrid Undset (1882–1949), lived here at Bjerkebæk while she wrote the novels that made her win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1928. The place opened as a museum in 2007 and has been recreated as it looked like originally in the 1930s.
She wrote the medieval novels about Kristin Lavransdatter (1920-1922) and Olav Audunssøn (1925-1927) in Bjerkebæk.
Sigrid Undset converted to Catholicism in 1924. This is reflected in a number of essays and contemporary novels that she wrote in the 1930s and 1940s.
In 1940, Sigrid Undset had to leave Norway because of her active opposition to Nazism. She lived in the USA throughout the war and fought tirelessly for Norway and the allies in articles and lectures. She also committed herself to the fate of the Jews. After the war, she returned to Bjerkebæk, which had been vandalized by the Germans.
