Os preguntaréis porqué estando delante de un estadio de fútbol veis como título del virtual "LA CATEDRAL" pues la explicación es sencilla:
Al parecer en 1447 había en este vasto solar una vieja ermita al Santo Mamés, en un altozano próximo a la Ría de Bilbao. Sobre aquella ermita se construiría un convento a los padres franciscanos y posteriormente se erigiría la actual Santa Casa Misericordia o asilo de San Mamés, en cuya capilla se le sigue rindiendo culto al Santo.
En 1913, junto al asilo, se inauguraría el emblemático estadio de fútbol. De hecho, se trata del único estadio cuyo nombre tiene un ancestral origen religioso y que posteriormente ha sido bautizado por los aficionados al fútbol como “La Catedral”.
Se dice que se le conocía con este sobrenombre porque daba lugar a conversaciones como esta:
- ¿Adónde vas?
- A San Mamés.
- ¿A la ermita?
- No, a La Catedral.
Un poco de Historia
El antiguo San Mamés fue un estadio de fútbol ubicado en la villa de Bilbao, donde jugó sus partidos como local el Athletic Club desde 1913 hasta su clausura y posterior demolición al término de la temporada 2012/13.
El nuevo y actual estadio se inauguró el 16 de septiembre de 2013, a las 22:00 horas, con motivo de un partido contra el R.C. Celta de Vigo correspondiente a la 4.ª jornada de Liga de la temporada 2013/14.
Para ver la importancia de este Club en la historia del fútbol nacional podemos destacar:

Se trata de un premio otorgado anualmente por el diario deportivo Marca a los máximos goleadores de la Primera y de la Segunda División Nacional. Por extensión, también suele utilizarse de forma genérica el término «pichichi» para referirse al máximo goleador de un torneo futbolístico.

José Ángel Iribar ‘El Chopo’ (apodo que tuvo por su gran altura y aspecto) es el jugador con mayor número de partidos jugados, 466, de ahí que tenga una estatua delante del campo de San Mamés. Esta estatua se ha inaugurado el pasado 16 de diciembre de 2023, con motivo del 125 aniversario del club Bilbaíno.
La gran tradición y los valores que caracterizan al Athletic Club han terminado por afianzar este nombre con más fuerza que nunca. Pero, la leyenda continúa en manos del Athletic Club y sus aficionados, quienes se reúnen en este enclave en días de partido.
Un lugar donde confluyen de inigualable manera, sacrificio, culto, carácter y pasión en nombre de un Santo llamado Mamés.
Este estadio reune los días de partido a 53.000 aficionados, que llegan con su familia y amigos a animar al Athletic y disfrutar del fútbol. Bilbao se viste de rojo y blanco y los alrededores de La Catedral son una marea de camisetas, bufandas y banderas del Athletic.
Sin duda uno de los mayores símblos y orgullo de la ciudad de Bilbao son la afición rojiblanca y su campo.
