Welcome to DownTown Annapolis, the capital of my adopted home state of Maryland, and the county seat of Anne Arundel. The beginnings of Annapolis date back to the mid-1650s and for a short time was the capital of the United States.
This cache will bring you on a short tour of the town that is a lovely place to visit at all times of year, though summer weekend it can be quite crowded.. The tour can be done in any order.
You will need to find five (5) pieces of information and email them to me. Finally, at the given coordinates between Ego Alley and the Market House, you will need to attach a picture of yourself or some other identifying belonging or paper with your caching name on it.
Waypoint 1: Church Circle you're standing in the shadow of St. Anne's Church which has existed here in some form since 1704 although the current building has been here since 1859.
On the north side of the building, you'll see a small cemetery. Tell me what symbol is at the head of the mausoleum of "M. Henry" (if the fence is closed and you cannot get close enough to see the cemetery, look behind you at a small triangle in the intersection. You will see a concrete structure. Tell me what kind of animal you see)
Waypoint 2: Governor's Mansion - I don't know what kind of accessibility this place has, I'll leave that up to you if you can check it out. I say be safe and look from afar. Behind the fence, there is a tree with a small plaque. Tell me what kind of tree it is and the date on the plaque.
Waypoint 3: State House (Where the magic happens) you'll find a bell that was on the USS Maryland that was docked at Pearl Harbor and mostly survived the attack. It served in the rest of WWII but was soon retired and scrapped. Tell me who was the Treasurer listed on the plaque behind the bell.
Waypoint 4: Guardians of the First Amendment Memorial: Find a black metal bench in front of the memorial and tell me in which local town it was manufactured in. Then find the plaque on the brick wall on the left and tell me the forecasted high temperature for that day.
Waypoint 5: Commodore John Barry statue: The Naval Academy gates are open from 6am until 10pm. Anyone can enter and reach this statue during those hours. (If you wish to tour the grounds, proceed to the visitor center. You will need a government issued ID and pass through a metal detector) (Fun Fact: There are two Heisman Trophies on display in Lejeune Hall) Tell me who gave the statue and when from the back, down low.
Waypoint 6: Kunta Kinte - Alex Haley Memorial. This is a very popular place to sit and rest and take pictures with the statue. Please do the same with you and anyone in your party or some other object that proves you were there.
I hope you enjoyed your walk around town and take the time to explore some more. There are several geocaches and lab caches to be found as well.
While visiting, please be sure to check out the other caches nearby, like the new virtual Ego Alley GCAJG3A, the CAM 2023 King Williams College mystery GCA331P, and a few others in the area
