Geocache Description:

Pocahontas State Park draws many people for many reasons:  hiking, biking, bird watching, human powered boating, educational & interpretative programs... and geocaching :)   This virtual geocache will bring you to one of the park's iconic locations...and for good reason.   The Beaver Lake Dam is one of the most visited sites in the park and is easily accessible for most visitors.  Regardless of what brings you to Pocahontas State Park, make a stop here to enjoy the view and admire the workmanship of the Civilian Conversation Corp that built this structure back in the 1930s.

The view here is the type of setting reminiscent of so many postcards from years gone by.  Nice view...a quick visual reference to spark a fun memory.  Though technology of today has essentially replaced the classic post card (though the Park Office or Visitor's Center may have some), you will have the opportunity to use that technology to snap a photo worthy of your own postcard.   To claim this virtual geocache, you have 2 options:

1. Post in your "Found it" log a photo of you with the Beaver Lake Dam also in the photo.  For cachers choosing to remain anonymous, a photo with a geocaching related item at the dam is also acceptable -- travel bug/trackable, GPS device, geo-doggy, hiking stick...anything other than the standard photo of the dam :)

2. If posting photos is not your deal, then follow these instructions for the 2nd option.  First, position yourself on the trail looking down the hill with the Beaver Lake Dam to your right (just uphill from the posted coordinates).  Look at the colorful wooden obelisk next to the trail.  Email or message the Cache Owner with the distance listed on the bottom sign.

"Found it" logs without photos or validation from the Cache Owner will be subject for deletion.

This recreational park was built on farmland and timbered forest by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) for people in the Richmond-Petersburg-Hopewell area. From 1938 through 1942, the park was operated by the National Park Service (NPS) as the Swift Creek Recreational Demonstration Area, and from 1942 through 1945, it was a recreation area for soldiers during World War II. NPS donated the facility to Virginia State Parks on June 6, 1946.   (Source: Pocahontas State Park)
