Znany jest głównie ze swojej imponującej bryły w kształcie wiaty wspartej na żelbetonowych słupach, pod którą kryje się poczekalnia dla pasażerów oraz lokale usługowe. Jego główna część jest jednak skryta pod ziemią. To cztery perony, które obsługują rocznie kilkanaście milionów podróżnych!
It is known mainly for its impressive structure in the shape of a shelter supported on reinforced concrete pillars, under which there is a waiting room for passengers and service premises. However, its main part is hidden underground. These are four platforms that serve several million travelers every year!
Na początek trochę historii... / First of all, a bit of history…
W 1879 r. inżynier Paweł Fliederbaum opracował projekt dwupoziomowego głównego dworca w Warszawie, który miał powstać z przebudowy istniejącego od 1845 r. Dworca Wiedeńskiego Drogi Żelaznej Warszawsko-Wiedeńskiej. Nie został on jednak zrealizowany.
In 1879, engineer Paweł Fliederbaum developed a design for a two-story main station in Warsaw, which was to be built from the reconstruction of the Vienna Station on the Warsaw-Vienna Railway, which had existed since 1845. However, it was not implemented.
W 1932 r. wzdłuż Al. Jerozolimskich, pomiędzy ul. Marszałkowską i ul. Emilii Plater rozpoczęła się budowa Dworca Głównego. Miał on być jednym z najnowocześniejszych i największych dworców w Europie. Projekt zakładał budowę 6 peronów w części podziemnej, nad którymi znajdować się miał gmach z trzema halami: kasową, dla pasażerów przyjeżdżających i dla odjeżdżających. Budynek pomyślano jako budowlę reprezentacyjną, wizytówkę Warszawy i Polski. Niestety, aż do wybuchu II wojny światowej Dworzec Główny nie został ukończony. Został wysadzony w powietrze przez Niemców w ramach systemowego niszczenia infrastruktury komunikacyjnej stolicy.
In 1932, along Jerozolimskie Avenue, between Marszałkowska Street and Emilii Plater Street, the construction of the Main Railway Station began. It was supposed to be one of the most modern and largest stations in Europe. The project assumed the construction of 6 platforms in the underground part, above which there was to be a building with three halls: a ticket office, a hall for arriving passengers and one for departing passengers. The building was conceived as a representative building, a showcase of Warsaw and Polish. Unfortunately, until the outbreak of World War II, the Main Railway Station was not completed. It was blown up by the Germans as part of the systemic destruction of the capital's transport infrastructure.
W 1972 r. rozpoczęła się budowa obecnego Dworca Centralnego, który był jedną ze sztandarowych inwestycji lat 70. i bardzo modernistyczną jak na tamte czasy, dzięki rozwiązaniom takim jak ruchome schody, automatycznie otwierane drzwi, windy, czy system klimatyzacji. W budowę zaangażowanych było aż 26 przedsiębiorstw państwowych oraz wojsko, dzięki czemu projekt zrealizowano w 1100 dni. Centralnym elementem jest imponujących rozmiarów hala główna z m.in. kasami, poczekalniami, urzędem pocztowym, lokalami gastronomicznymi i salonikiem dla VIP-ów. Hala wykonana została ze stali i szkła, a jej nowatorska i transparentna konstrukcja zyskała sobie uznanie w oczach ówczesnych architektów. W części podziemnej wybudowano 4 perony, każdy o imponującej długości 400 m, system podziemnych przejść, dojściami do przystanków komunikacji miejskiej oraz przystanków kolejowych: Warszawa Śródmieście i Warszawa Śródmieście WKD.
In 1972, the construction of the current Central Railway Station began, which was one of the flagship investments of the 1970s and very modern for those times, thanks to solutions such as escalators, automatically opening doors, elevators and an air conditioning system. As many as 26 state-owned enterprises and the army were involved in the construction, thanks to which the project was completed in 1100 days. The centrepiece is the impressive main hall with m.in ticket offices, waiting rooms, a post office, restaurants and a VIP lounge. The hall was made of steel and glass, and its innovative and transparent structure gained recognition in the eyes of the architects of the time. In the underground part, 4 platforms were built, each with an impressive length of 400 m, a system of underground passages, access to public transport stops and railway stops: Warszawa Śródmieście and Warszawa Śródmieście WKD.
W 2012 r. dworzec przeszedł generalny remont, w ramach którego m.in. gruntownie wyczyszczono elementy dachu i elewacji, wymieniono najbardziej zużyte elementy wystroju i część instalacji technicznych. W kolejnych latach przebudowie uległ układ funkcjonalny budynku dworca. W hali głównej powstała antresola, które połączyła znajdujące się po przeciwległych stronach poczekalnie. Antresola została oparta na trzech filarach, co miało w minimalnym stopniu integrować w przestrzeń funkcjonalną dworca. Poniżej, wzdłuż przeszklonej elewacji hali powstały kawiarnie i sklepy, a pośrodku hali trzy wyspy z dodatkowymi lokalami usługowymi.
In 2012, the station underwent a major renovation, as part of which, inter alia: elements of the roof and façade were thoroughly cleaned, the most worn elements of the décor and some of the technical installations were replaced. In the following years, the functional layout of the station building was rebuilt. A mezzanine was built in the main hall, which connected the waiting rooms on opposite sides. The mezzanine was based on three pillars, which was to integrate into the functional space of the station to a minimal extent. Below, along the glass façade of the hall, cafes and shops were created, and in the middle of the hall there were three islands with additional service premises.
W 2019 r. dworzec został wpisany do rejestru zabytków, a także otrzymał inne wyróżnienie. Nadano mu patrona, którym został polski kompozytor Stanisław Moniuszko. Tablica upamiętniająca to wydarzenie znajduje się na elewacji od strony Al. Jerozolimskich.
In 2019, the station was entered into the register of monuments and also received another distinction. He was named after the Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko. A plaque commemorating this event is located on the façade from Aleje Jerozolimskie.
