Gerard Philips
Gerard Philips (1858-1942) richtte met de steun van zijn vader op 15 mei 1891 de gloeilampenfabriek Philips op. Bovendien legde Gerard Philips met de oprichting in 1914 van het Philips’ Natuurkundig Laboratorium de basis voor de huidige kennisregio Eindhoven, Brainport.
Gerard en zijn jongere broer Anton - die in 1895 bij het bedrijf kwam – waren sociaal betrokken ondernemers. Rond 1900 was Philips een van de eerste bedrijven in Nederland met doorbetaling bij ziekte en vanaf 1909 gratis medische zorg. Werknemers kregen ook goede huisvesting door de bouw van woningen. In 1913 werd een deel van de opbrengst van de beursgang van het bedrijf besteed aan een pensioenfonds. Illustratief voor het belang dat Gerard Philips hechtte aan goed onderwijs was de oprichting in 1916 van een studiefonds voor de kinderen van de werknemers, zodat middelbaar en hoger onderwijs voor iedereen toegankelijk werd.
Onder leiding van Gerard en zijn jongere broer Anton groeide de onderneming uit tot een wereldwijd concern dat zorgde voor welvaart, welzijn en werkgelegenheid voor vele mensen in Eindhoven en ver daarbuiten. Toen Gerard in 1922 terugtrad als directeur, liet hij een goed georganiseerd en innovatief bedrijf na met een solide financiële basis, klaar voor de volgende fase van expansie.
Kunstwerk
Kunstenaar Andreas Hetfeld ontwierp een eerbetoon aan Gerard Philips in de vorm van een zeven meter hoog kunstwerk voor menselijkheid en innovatie. De 503 aan elkaar gelaste lagen van cortenstaal verwijzen naar CT-scans, waarbij dwarsdoorsneden van het menselijk lichaam worden gemaakt. Dit vormt een link met de huidige gezondheidstechnologiekoers van Philips. De doorgang verwijst aan de voorkant naar de vorm van een gloeilamp en mondt uit in een brede ‘Poort naar de toekomst’.
Het kunstwerk werd gebouwd op de werf van Shipyard Millingen in Millingen aan de Rijn. Op 29 april werd het per schip vervoerd naar Zaltbommel, de geboorteplaats van Gerard, en vandaaruit verder getransporteerd naar Eindhoven.
Het kunstwerk staat tijdelijk in het Gloeilampplantsoen op Strijp T, een voormalig industriecomplex van Philips. Op termijn zal het worden verplaatst naar een nieuw te ontwikkelen park achter De Witte Dame in het centrum van de stad.

Gerard Philips
Gerard Philips (1858-1942), with the support of his father, founded the Philips light bulb factory on May 15, 1891. Moreover, with the establishment in 1914 of Philips' Natuurkundig Laboratorium, Gerard Philips laid the foundation for today's knowledge region of Eindhoven, Brainport.
Gerard and his younger brother Anton - who joined the company in 1895 - were socially committed entrepreneurs. Around 1900, Philips was one of the first companies in the Netherlands to offer continued sick pay and, beginning in 1909, free medical care. Employees also received good housing by building homes. In 1913, part of the proceeds of the company's IPO was dedicated to a pension fund. Illustrative of the importance Gerard Philips attached to good education was the establishment in 1916 of a study fund for the children of employees, so that secondary and higher education would be accessible to all.
Under the leadership of Gerard and his younger brother Anton, the company grew into a global concern that provided prosperity, welfare and employment for many people in Eindhoven and far beyond. When Gerard stepped down as director in 1922, he left behind a well-organized and innovative company with a solid financial foundation, ready for the next phase of expansion.
The statue
Artist Andreas Hetfeld designed a tribute to Gerard Philips in the form of a seven-meter-high work of art for humanity and innovation. The 503 layers of Corten steel welded together refer to CT scans, in which cross sections of the human body are made. This forms a link to Philips' current health technology direction. At the front, the passage refers to the shape of a light bulb and ends in a wide "Portal to the Future".
The artwork was built at the shipyard of Shipyard Millingen in Millingen aan de Rijn. On April 29, it was transported by ship to Zaltbommel, Gerard's birthplace, and from there onward to Eindhoven.
The artwork is temporarily located in the Gloeilampplantsoen at Strijp T, a former Philips industrial complex. It will eventually be moved to a newly developed park behind De Witte Dame in the city center.

The cache
To log this virtual there is the following task:
- Go to the Gerard Philips statue.
- Take a picture in which you are standing and with the Gerard Philips statue clearly in the background. Add your photo to your log. Original and creative pictures are highly appreciated.
- You do not have to be recognizable in the photo, but in that case, make sure that something with your geocaching name is in the photo so that it is clear that you were at the location.
